About

Hi, I’m Brent! I don’t have a concise self-description yet, but I think this blog will help me find my way to one.

I grew up in Texas, mostly Houston, and now I live in Chicago. I was raised in the Churches of Christ, then spent a while in the house church movement, then spent a while in the Episcopal Church. Now I’m an Associate Pastor of an independent church I love. I completed an M.Div at Abilene Christian University. I make quilts (including the one in that picture). I have a dog named Hank (short for Henri Nouwen). I log books on StoryGraph, and I log films on Letterboxd. I play Zelda. (Is this disclaimer necessary?) What I write on this site is only my perspective, not that of anyone who pays me.

In college I came out to a professor who wrote a poem about the conversation. He compared me to a church mouse.

UPDATE (8/22/22): Changed “I log books on Goodreads” to “I log books on StoryGraph” in an effort to avoid Amazon.

UPDATE (5/28/22): Changed “Now I’m part of an independent church I love” to “Now I’m an Associate Pastor of an independent church I love” to reflect a job change in March. Updated “(Is this disclaimer necessary in 2021?)” to remove the year.
